Big Bend National Park – Texas

You’ll find true solitary solace at Big Bend. It’s one of the hardest National Parks to access, but also one of the most biodiverse. Here, you’re surrounded by the Chisos Mountains, Chihuahuan Desert, and the Rio Grande. A 90-minute drive to the iconic artist’s town of Marfa, Big Bend is a great day trip for hiking and dipping in the hot springs. The best time to visit is fall or spring, or early morning if you’re visiting in the summer. Accommodations include yurt, camping, or drive-in options.

Great Sand Dunes National Park – Colorado

Who knew the tallest sand dunes in the U.S. would be in southern Colorado? With peaks up to 14,000 feet tall, it’s no wonder this park has been called a “sandbox of epic proportions.” There are no motorized vehicles allowed on the dunes, but you can hike up and slide down on a sand sled (available for rent at shops nearby). There’s not much by way of restaurants or nightlife surrounding the park, but Colorado Springs, Durango and Santa Fe are all within a 3-hour drive. A special trip to the park is worth it to see these natural marvels.

Biscayne National Park – Florida

Just 45 minutes from Miami is the largest coral reef in North America, tons of marine life, and evidence of human life dating back 10,000 years. 95% of Biscayne National Park lies underwater, making it one of the most unique National Parks in the U.S. and accessible only by boat. Take a guided tour, paddleboard through mangroves, snorkel over shipwrecks, or boat, dive, and fish in clear waters.

Isle Royale National Park – Michigan

This island in the middle of Lake Superior is accessible by a ferry, 3-hour boat ride, or 45-minute seaplane and only open in the summertime. But, much like Biscayne, even (and maybe especially) the most remote National Parks in the U.S. are worth visiting. Enjoy a quiet hike, a refreshing swim, and a beautiful spot to camp overnight. At Isle Royale, you might spot a group of moose or even the elusive wolfpack that the park helped repopulate!

North Cascades National Park – Washington

Known as the “American Alps,” you won’t believe the landscape views at North Cascades National Park. With over 500 lakes and ponds, there are endless opportunities for kayaking, paddleboarding, and more. The park is only open in the summer, but when it is, there are endless opportunities for hiking, whitewater rafting, horseback riding, and enjoying the park’s 500+ lakes and ponds. Don’t miss Colonial Creek Falls, the tallest waterfall in the U.S.!

Saguaro National Park – Arizona

Fill up your water bottles and head straight into the scene of wild west movie. Just outside of Tucson is Saguaro National Park, home to the tallest cacti in the U.S. And by tall, we mean that the park’s tallest-ever Saguaro was 78 ft.! From April to June you can enjoy beautiful cactus flowers, but desert landscape and wildlife is fascinating and breathtaking all year round.

Channel Islands National Park – California

Visit the Galapagos of North America just 90 minutes from Los Angeles! You’d never know you were near civilization at Channel Islands National Park. There are no cars or nearby restaurants, just an all-natural island escape where you may spot whales, bald eagles, miniature foxes, and sea lions. Kayaking through the park’s unique sea caves is a favorite of Channel Islands visitors.

Kenai Fjords National Park – Alaska

Alaska has some of the most National Parks in the U.S. of any other state, but most of them are hard to access. Not this one, though—Kenai Fjords National Park is just a quick drive or train ride from Anchorage! Wilderness in Alaska is unique, and this park offers a front row to all of it: glaciers, fjords, breaching whales, sea otters, puffins, eagles…the list goes on.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park – New Mexico

Hundreds of millions of years ago, caves formed within the Guadalupe Mountains, and now they’re accessible for you to explore! Home of the largest cave chamber in North America (and lots of migrating bats), some caves at Carlsbad Caverns National Park go as deep underground as high as the Empire State Building is tall. The hike through the caverns takes about an hour to complete, and you won’t soon forget the incredible rock formations and gigantic “rooms” made of limestone.

Voyageurs National Park – Minnesota

Nestled along the Canadian border is Voyageurs National Park. This Dark Sky Park is one of the best places to stargaze, and it’s so far north you may even see the Northern Lights! The dense forest is perfect for long hikes, and there are many lakes for boating and swimming. Guests may stay on a campsite (though some are only accessible by canoe), or on the water in a houseboat if you have a permit.

      Hotels

There are plenty of places to book your stay where you’ll be able to take in the sun and seas. You’ll get the full Monaco experience by booking a room at the beautiful Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo. Located in the heart of Monte-Carlo on the world-famous Place du Casino, the Hôtel de Paris has been serving guests the very definition of luxury for over a century and a half. The grand lobby exudes extravagance with crystal chandeliers, marble colonnades, and opulent low-relief sculptures. Moving into the guest rooms, visitors are welcomed with an immaculate and elevated interior that is fit for royalty. When dinner time rolls around, head down to Le Louis XV – Alain Ducasse, a temple of modern gastronomy that holds a three-Michelin star rating, then head to the Monte Carlo Beach Club for a variety of fun activities like water skiing or beach volleyball.

Charm and refined elegance are just a few of the many words that have been used to describe Hermitage. This Belle Epoque historical site is just a brief walk from the Casino de Monte-Carlo and is connected to the Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo. As one of the most exquisite palaces in the world, the Hermitage holds 280 rooms total, with 20 of those being suites–15 junior suites and eight Monte-Carlo Diamond Suites that offer breathtaking views of Monaco’s Port Hercules and the Prince’s Palace.

You can also visit the boutique Hôtel Port Palace for a view of the harbor and a modern style of luxury. The Monaco shoreline is enhanced by the Fairmont Monte Carlo, which features a range of amenities and a heated swimming pool with uninterrupted views of dazzling, seaside sunsets.

      Restaurants

People are drawn from around the world to experience Monaco’s unparalleled fine dining. Located in the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort, Blue Bay serves as one of the top fine dining experiences in all of Monaco. The Michelin star-holding head Chef Marcel Ravin offers a bold repertoire of Caribbean and Mediterranean cuisines. The panoramic outdoor terrace gives guests a stunning view of the coastline and looking inward the open air concept allows for views of the kitchen and staff. The gourmet smells that surround the restaurant are practically enough to lift you up and carry you inside.

Set in the exquisite Hôtel Métropole, Joël Robuchon Monte-Carlo focuses on expertly crafting dishes that reflect the tastes of the sun-drenched Mediterranean that surrounds. Nightlife

Monaco has a reputation for embracing lavish nightlife with a host of nightclubs and bars to keep you partying all night long. It won’t be a trip to Monaco without visiting Jimmyz, the legendary hot spot with a Japanese garden ambiance and exclusive door. For a sophisticated outing, The Living Room is open late for drinks and bites with a decadent environment and beautiful crowd. You also won’t regret stopping by the intimate Le Bar Américain for a speakeasy-inspired night filled with live jazz sounds and a stylish, 1920s vibe.

      Experiences

Guests flood to Monaco each year for their variety of one-of-a-kind attractions and events. The most prevalent among them is the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix, a prestigious and historical racing event that has brought celebrities and luxury travelers to the area since its start in 1950. The Monaco Grand Prix is known to be the most difficult Formula 1 racing event out of all the World Championship races. It is also the most prestigious motor race in the world, making it the perfect reason to buy a ticket to Monaco. Held annually at the end of May, the race lands right in the sweet spot for vacationers looking to escape to this Western European paradise. If you’re looking to experience the race in comfort and sophistication, you can reserve a private terrace with full food and drink services to view the race from above the crowds.

Head down to Monaco’s Fontvieille Harbour and climb aboard your private yacht for an unparalleled sailing tour up the French Riviera. On the way, you’ll pass some of the most charming towns in Western Europe, sun-soaked beaches, and beautiful little islands. You’ll be able to see Menton, Villefranche-sur-Mer, Cap’d’Ail and Beaulieu from the boat as you sip champagne and work on your tan. If you’re looking for something a little more romantic, you might consider a sunset cruise to take in views of the water.

The region is also known for its iconic Casino de Monte-Carlo, an elegant destination for gambling and entertainment, prominently featured in the James Bond franchise. The Princier de Monaco is also a notable sight to see as it acts as the royal residence of the current Prince of Monaco.

              The Modern Speakeasy

One of the hottest nightlife trends in recent years is the resurrection of the secretive speakeasy bar. Made popular during the 1920s prohibition era, hidden craft cocktail lounges are making a comeback all around the U.S. From New York to LA, these intriguing establishments channel the aesthetic of America’s historical 13-year dry spell with contemporary (and legal) takes on the drinking atmosphere. The lack of advertisement and a sign out front means you may need to be ‘in the know’ to know these destinations even exist. So what exactly is going on behind the doors of these modern, covert hot spots?

              Los Angeles Modern Speakeasies

If you’ve spent time out on the town in Los Angeles, you may have heard some buzz about at least one bar under the Houston Hospitality umbrella. Each of their ten speakeasy locations boasts a whimsical theme allowing patrons to step into another place and time. A visit to No Vacancy will take you back to the roaring 20s in a vintage houseparty environment. La Descarga acts as an homage to Havana, Cuba, with impressive performances matching the detailed cultural décor, and an even more secretive cigar room.

If the 80s is your preferred era, you can stop by the group’s most recent venture, Break Room 86. With a wall of retro TV sets, fully-functioning arcade games, and karaoke rooms hidden beyond secret doors, the speakeasy concept is brought into the 21st century with a touch of nostalgia. Each location is preceded by a mysterious and theatrical entrance that’s sure to make a lasting impression on your night out.

              Chicago Modern Speakeasies

The Windy City is fully-stocked with exclusive underground hot spots for you to duck into during your visit. The Walk In boasts a unique cooler door entrance where a live DJ keeps the vibe flowing on weekend nights. Keep an eye out for Three Dots and a Dash, where you can find an upbeat Tiki bar at the end of an alley. With strong tropical drinks and servers adorned in Hawaiian dresses, you’ll completely forget you’re in the middle of Chicago’s River North neighborhood.

You can also head to the nearby Blind Barber, known for its barbershop storefront, to party all night in the secretive lounge hidden away by an unmarked door. For a truly exclusive experience, you can head to Room 13, a members-only speakeasy located beneath The Old Chicago Inn. Complete with an ever-changing password and strict dress code, a membership grants you live jazz music to go along with the 1920s-style craft cocktails.

              Phoenix Modern Speakeasies

If your travels lead you to Phoenix, you’ll have a number of hidden watering holes to choose from—if you can find them. To get to Honor Amongst Thieves you’ll have to head up a back staircase where a door with a peephole awaits. Knowledgeable bartenders help you choose your evening spirit with guests enjoying the seductive velvet seating. Just outside of Phoenix, you can visit Kazimierz World Wine Bar in downtown Scottsdale.

To get a taste of one of the over 1,800 selections from their wine list, your only clue to the entrance is to look out for a sign with the prophetic message, “The Truth Is Inside.”  For a bit of exclusivity, you can head to Phoenix’s former red light district and journey into the basement of the Renaissance Phoenix Downtown Hotel to find Melinda’s Alley. With a maximum capacity of only 45 guests, this cash-only tavern will have you feeling like a lawless VIP in the middle of prohibition.

              New York City Modern Speakeasies

New York State, once home to 100,000 of the nation’s speakeasies during the 1920s, has brought the trend full-circle in the 21st century. Tucked behind a coffee shop’s storefront, Bathtub Gin is easy to miss but worth the find to taste the elaborate, Victorian cocktails or take a photo in the copper bathtub decor piece. You’ll receive a dash of insight with your cocktail at Employees Only, a West Village hot spot with a glowing “Psychic” sign out front hinting at its presence. The house psychic will forecast your future as the eclectic food and drink menu keep you satisfied ‘til dawn.

To live out a truly authentic night, you can visit former prohibition-operated speakeasy the Back Room. Don’t let the “Lower East Side Toy Company” sign distract you, this bar hides beyond a gate and down a flight of stairs—the original entrance used by law-breaking patrons almost 100 years ago.

              Experience a Modern Speakeasy

As this vintage form of nightlife finds a resurgence in the coming years, there are sure to be more unique speakeasy locales showing up on your city’s radar. The concept has even garnered an international appeal with new American-style hideaways popping up in Paris, London, Rome, and Amsterdam.

Whether you’re looking for a seductive night-cap, a unique craft drink, or an energetic dance floor, the endless possibilities for creativity allow the speakeasy concept to thrive. So keep your eyes and ears open the next time you pass by what seems to be a simple barber shop, storage room, or furniture store, because it might just be the doorway to your next favorite hot spot.
