The Must-See Cities on Your Solo Portugal Trip

Photo: Zocha Group – The Must-See Cities On Your Solo Portugal Trip

    Experience The Real Portugal

Resting on the coast of the Iberian peninsula is Portugal, one of Europe’s most fascinating and underrated countries. Portugal is full to the brim with incredible architecture, fun beach towns, ancient history, and fresh seafood. Deemed one of the safest and most affordable countries in western Europe, Portugal is a perfect spot for solo travelers to plan a trip.

    lagos portugal

Photo: Zocha Group – The Must-See Cities On Your Solo Portugal Trip

Portuguese is the national language of Portugal, but you’ll find many English speakers there too. This makes it easy to meet new people and feel confident finding your way around. Portugal also has a great hostel culture, but don’t worry—gone are the days of bunk beds and shared showers; in Portugal, you’ll find an array of hostel options that satisfy any standard. Of course there are plenty of comfortable Airbnbs and hotels throughout the country, but staying in hostels is one of the best ways for solo travelers to get connected to the city and fellow travelers.

    Lisbon

Lisbon is the country’s bustling capital, and it’s first on our list of best place to visit in Portugal. For starters, there’s solid public transportation and it’s easy to get around on foot. Female travelers often report feeling particularly safe in Lisbon, even when walking alone at night. You’ll want to carve out at least three days to enjoy all Lisbon has to offer. Afterall, the city is brimming with culture and art—check out the Gulbenkian Museum for one of the most widely noted private art collections in Europe! By day, relax on the Algarve beaches and wander through the flea markets in Alfama. There’s also amazing food and drink in Lisbon. We recommend the Time Out Market food hall, the rooftops at Topo or Java, cocktails at Machimbombo, and dinner reservations at Rocco Gastrobar!

    Lisbon

    Sintra

Sintra is located not far from Lisbon, making this a logical next destination! Something cool about Sintra is that the whole region is a UNESCO World Heritage site, so you know you’re in for a cultural and historical treat. Parque de Pena is a perfect example of natural beauty mixing with Portuguese history, so you don’t want to miss a stroll through this park in Sintra. There are a great number of royal landmarks, too, like Monserrate Palace. This architectural wonder is incredible inside and out, from it’s Indian-influenced exterior to the palace gardens. You’ll also want to check out the Moorish Castle, the Quinta da Regaleira and neighboring Initiation Well, the Castelo Dos Mouros, Palacio Biester and Palacio Nacional de Queluz. Start your Sintra day with a cup of coffee at Garagem Cafe, and end it by enjoying the view on the cliffside patio at Moinho Dom Quixote.

    Porto

Porto is the second biggest city in Portugal, but is the chiller, more traditional cousin to Lisbon’s cosmopolitan epicenter. You’ll find slower days in Porto if you want them, but there’s also plenty of exploring to do. Taking a wine tour through the Douro Valley is a great way to see the landscape, sip from local wineries, and make like minded acquaintances. Porto also has fun food tours so you can eat your way through the city. Architecture lovers won’t want to miss Porto’s churches— especially Igreja do Carmo, Clerigos, and Cathedral of Porto—, the Dom Louis bridge, or the Sao Bento train station. If you’re in the mood for browsing, check out Livraria Lello bookstore and Rua do Rosario for local shopping. Stop for coffee at C’Alma or Epoca, grab brunch at Monarca, take a walk through the Mercado Bom Successo, or stop for a glass of wine at Alibi! It’s also worth noting that Porto is a great hub for day trips to other cities. Check out Coimbra to see the oldest university in Portugal (on the grounds of a former palace) and get to know the country’s former capital.

    Lagos

When you’re ready to hang out on the beach, it’s time to head to Lagos. Surf hostels are an efficient way to get close to the beach, have a drink with new-found friends, and have a low-maintenance spot to rest at the end of a sunny day. Praia dos Estudantes is a favorite beach among the younger crowd for its proximity to bars and restaurants, while Ponta de Piedade is known for being the most beautiful beach in Lagos. Praia D’El Rey Beach Club is a great spot for relaxing, while Salgados Beach Club and Barra Beach Club are your go-tos for a wild night out. When you’re not resting in the sand, consider touring one of the many caves in the Algarve region, taking a kayak out on the water, or watching the sunset on a chartered boat or guided horseback ride. For food, check out Casinha do Petisco for authentic Portuguese seafood, Padaria Central for traditional Portuguese pastries, and Gelícia for gelato!

Experience The Finest Wedding Venues in Southern California

Imagine: you clink glasses with the love of your life, you’re married as of an hour ago, and you watch the California sun going down over the water. Or maybe you’re watching friends dance under string lights on the patio of a sprawling vineyard. Or maybe you’re twirling on marble floors at a historic Los Angeles hotel, wondering how you got so lucky. Whether you’re hoping for a beachside bash or an intimate courtyard affair, there’s sure to be a Southern California wedding venue that fits the bill for your big day. Here are a few of our favorites.

      Bel-Air Bay Club

Let the Pacific Coast Highway guide your guests to the entrance of your special day. Located in Bel-Air, this private clubhouse and sprawling lawn is the perfect mix of all things Southern California. There are multiple indoor and outdoor options to serve as ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception spaces. Another thing we love about Bay Club is that their Michelin-starred chef and professional catering team will be serving guests on your wedding day. The hardest decision you’ll have to make at the Bay Club is which picturesque backdrop is best for your nuptials.

      Rancho Bellasante

Perfect for a couple who wants to be outside in style, Temecula’s Rancho Bellasanté is one of the most beautiful vineyards and lemon groves in California. Get married with a view of the mountains, or among the trees, or next to an idyllic pond…the list goes on! Wedding packages at Rancho Bellasanté include 12-hour access to the space on wedding day, a 2-hour engagement photo shoot, dressing suites, and much more.

      The Majestic Downtown

We can’t get enough of the architecture at The Majestic in downtown Los Angeles. A fabulous mix of old Hollywood and European renaissance, The Majestic makes for a luxurious and unique wedding aesthetic. One of our favorite parts about this venue is how customizable your celebration can be. Opt to use the expert in-house caterer, or hire your own. Bring in your own bright flowers and personal touches, or let the simple majesty of the space speak for itself.

      LAuberge Del Mar

This seaside San Diego resort offers the estate-style wedding of your dreams. While there are plenty of beautiful indoor areas to choose from at this resort, we think you can’t beat the quiet coastline for your ceremony, reception, welcome drinks, or farewell brunch. One big plus for this venue? You, your new spouse, the wedding party, and all your guests will love staying at L’Auberge for the weekend, making this a relaxing weekend for all.

      Malibu Rocky Oaks Estate Vineyards

Planning a smaller affair? Malibu Rocky Oaks Estate is our favorite choice for smaller weddings in Southern California. It’s hard to believe this venue is in our home state of California instead of in the Italian countryside. Located up on a sunny hillside with a view of the Santa Monica Mountains no matter where you turn, you won’t find a more photo-worthy spot to say “I do.”

The Mission Hill Inn Hotel and Spa

Located in Riverside, The Mission Inn is about as iconic as it gets. We think this is one of the most versatile wedding venues in Southern California. Choose to get married in a decadent chapel, a Parisian ballroom, a Spanish art gallery, or outside in a Californian courtyard. There’s a venue at this hotel to fit any wedding vibe, and you’ll be glad that this historical landmark was the start of your love story.

There’s nothing like the sweeping view from Cielo Farms. This estate will transport you straight to Tuscany, and your guests will be awed by how the space transforms from a golden hour ceremony to an all-night celebration. Cielo Farms is a highly-awarded event space for a reason. From incredible natural beauty to an event team who really knows their stuff, this is easily one of the most sought-after vineyards in Southern California.

Allow the framework of a converted cathedral to be the breathtaking background of your wedding day. The ceiling soars up to 45-feet, and towering windows send sunlight streaming into your ceremony. The award-winning pair of chefs at Vibiana will personalize their menu to fit your tastes, which is only one of the shining aspects of this venue. 5 Unique Places to Get Married in France

Plan Your Perfect France Dream Wedding

While Paris may be the city of love, France is full of other beautiful cities you might not have considered for your destination wedding. Destination weddings have gained popularity in the last decade for a variety of weddings, but ultimately—who wouldn’t want to toast to their love in a country known for vineyard views, incredible culinary experiences, and wedding celebrations that don’t end until morning? If we were planning a wedding abroad, here are the five places to get married in France that we might consider.

        wedding france

Photo: Zocha Group – 5 Unique Places to get Married in France

        Chamonix

From incredible views of the Swiss Alps and lakeside valleys to quaint storefronts and bakeries, Chamonix is the picture of small-town French charm. Though it’s further from major airports, once your guests arrive, they’ll be staying right on the border of France, Switzerland, and Italy, making it easy to explore after the wedding weekend. Chamonix is known for world-class skiing in the winter and incredible hiking in the summer, making it a perfect wedding destination for adventurous couples. Even if that isn’t the case, everybody can find something to love about a quaint town filled with history and a summer sun that doesn’t set till 10 p.m.

Le Chalet Mont Blanc is one of the most sought-after wedding venues in the Chamonix area. It can accommodate up to 40 overnight guests, and their picturesque terraces are perfect for intimate rehearsal dinners and vow ceremonies. This property is complete with acres of private mountain land as well as a waterfall only guests can access.

        Burgundy

Take a high-speed train from Paris to Burgundy for a quiet countryside straight from your French daydreams. The Burgundy region produces—you guessed it—Burgundy wine, a dynamic and earthy blend that reflects the unique area where it’s produced. Only 3% of French wine comes from Burgundy, so you can assume that these bottles are in high demand. Burgundy was also once the wealthiest region in France, and now holds more chateaus than any other region in the country. Your guests will love exploring the bustling capital of Dijon, roaming the vineyards in Beaune, and soaking in all the historic gothic architecture and art.

In the heart of Burgundy, you’ll find the incredible Château de Varennes. This was named among the top ten best wedding venues in the world by CNN and has been owned by one family for over 400 years. Couples can expect a castle wedding of fairytale proportions, complete with luxury bedrooms, reception space for 250 people that has been maintained for peak historical charm, and rolling castle grounds and gardens for optimal outdoor celebrations.

        Nice

You’ve likely heard of Nice before, but sometimes it’s hard to pick the perfect city for a wedding in the South of France. Nice is the biggest city in the region, which makes travel to and from the area pretty simple. Nice is also a good hub for getting to other areas of the French Riviera, like Cannes, Saint-Tropez, and Monaco. Nice is perfect for a wedding weekend because couples and guests have options, options, options. Choose to live in Riviera resort paradise, or indulge in ancient ruins and back alley boutiques. Or, of course, do a bit of both! As one of the most-visited cities in France, second only to Paris, Nice guarantees your fill of beauty, beach time, and quintessential French romance and allure.

For a wedding in the South of France, you cannot beat Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild. This French palace features nine gardens inspired by different cultures, beautiful tea rooms, and an unbelievable view of the Mediterranean Sea. It’s the perfect balance of artistic, historic, and seaside bliss, conveniently located just between Nice and Monaco.

        Rouen

Enjoy the unique culture of northern France in Rouen. This medieval city is stacked with historical significance, especially because it’s in Normandy and near notable beaches that history buffs will want to visit. The River Seine runs right through the city, adding to the medieval ambience and idyllic sights that can only be found in quaint Rouen. This is also a convenient 2-hour trip from Paris, giving your guests options for how they spend their travel time.

Photo: Zocha Group – 5 Unique Places to get Married in France

Wedding venues in Rouen offer a variety of vibes. The Rouen Cathedral is one of most notable Gothic cathedrals in the world for its towering steeples and awe-inspiring interior. Couples who are hoping for a traditional church wedding with added French flair will want to consider the cathedral, but we also love Les Jardins d’Angélique for a secret-garden-inspired affair. Here, you’ll find mazes of gorgeous flowers and greenery to set the backdrop of an intimate wedding.

        destination

Photo: Zocha Group – 5 Unique Places to get Married in France

        Lyon

Lyon is known for fine cuisine and innovative gastronomy, making this a no-brainer destination wedding option. In fact, not only is it the culinary capital of France, it’s also noted world-wide as a center for culinary creativity. It goes without saying that couples who appreciate fabulous food will have a field day planning their wedding in Lyon. Beyond the culinary scene, Lyon is a perfect blend of historic and modern—complete with many UNESCO World Heritage sites—so you and your guests can expect to experience all the best of France in Lyon.

Invite up to 1,500 guests to your wedding at the Palais de la Bourse Lyon. Yes, you read that number right. There’s no better opportunity to throw the French soiree of your dreams than here at this historic monument located in the center of town. For a lower-key but extremely elegant ceremony, consider the Chateau de Corcelles, a 17th century castle on beautiful grounds in Lyon. You can invite a reasonable number of 130 guests and still execute a fairytale celebration.

An Epic Return to the New York Dining Scene

When it comes to fine dining in New York, nothing beats the All-American chophouse. Fine wine, thick cuts of meat, and heaping helpings of creamy mashed potatoes n’ mac and cheese. NYC has no shortage of quality steakhouses, but when superstar Chef Michael Mina announced he would be bringing his smash-hit steakhouse to the streets of New York City, a serious celebration was in order. Bourbon Steak has officially touched down in Central Park, in what critics are calling its greatest iteration yet. The legendary West coast steakhouse has certainly made a name for itself with its fine wines, craveworthy signature sides, and beautifully marbled cuts of meat, cooked to perfection with a little Chef Mina flair. From the sumptuous dining room to the best-in-class cocktail service, there’s certainly a lot to love. For those who value good food and good times- fire up the burners and get to know Bourbon Steak New York.

              The Story

Bourbon Steak New York marks a significant return for chef Michael Mina to the city where his illustrious culinary journey began. The new 300-seat restaurant is a nostalgic nod to his time at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, as well as his time at the legendary NY eateries Tribeca Grill and Aureole.

After leaving New York in 1989, Mina’s career soared in San Francisco, leading to the opening of Aqua in 1991 and earning multiple James Beard Foundation Awards. His partnership with Andre Agassi in 2003 birthed the Mina Group, transitioning Aqua to a Michelin-starred namesake restaurant. Bourbon Steak New York joins a celebrated lineup of Mina’s ventures, including Bourbon Steak locations in Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles, Bungalow Kitchen in Marin, Mina Brasserie in Dubai, and Pabu in San Francisco, showcasing Mina’s global culinary influence. Chef Mina has long expressed his excitement to return to New York, and that passion certainly comes through in the venue, menu, and experience.

              The Space

Once inside, it’s immediately apparent that you’re in for something special. The dining room has a gloriously retro feel, with dark wood, leather, and polished brass evoking the lavish nature of old New York. The warm lights above the marble bar top fill the space with energy, inviting guests to relax and unwind with a delicious drink in a sparkling glass. Hanging plants and manicured trees surround the plush booths, adding a refreshing energy that works well in tandem with the smoky smells wafting in from the kitchen. It’s an atmosphere that’s distinguished, but never pretentious.

              On The Menu

Chef Mina has assembled an airtight menu of steakhouse classics: all flavor and no filler. Dig into sumptuous plates of West coast oysters with a champagne mignonette, and crisp salads made with only the freshest local produce. All of the Bourbon steak signature dishes are present, including tuna tartare with asian pear and quail egg, and Chef Mina’s famous Maine lobster pot pie.

Photo: Rey Lopez | Bourbon Steak NYC

Then there’s the star of the show: thick cuts of woodfired prime beef and wagyu steak, rich with marbling and seared to perfection. Every menu decision was carefully considered to maximize flavor, and guests are invited to choose from a selection of premium steaks from across the country, or elite A5 Wagyu from three different prefectures in Japan. If you somehow have room for dessert, be sure not to skip the fresh beignet tower and the eye-catching flambeed chocolate fondue.

While most would consider steak a dinner food, patrons should feel no shame about indulging in the distinctly delicious breakfast menu. Prime steak and eggs, fluffy belgian waffles, and a continental trolley of warm pastries and market fresh fruit make a compelling argument for a chic little breakfast or brunch.

              Sip & Savor

The heart of Bourbon Steak is undoubtedly the bar. The beverage program adheres to the philosophy of elevating the classic American steakhouse, meaning all juices are hand-squeezed, all infusions are done in-house, and the wines and spirits available are the best from around the globe. First time diners can’t go wrong with a signature garden-grown cocktail, but special occasions might warrant a flight of reserve whiskey. Don’t be afraid to ask for a recommendation, the knowledgeable staff have a penchant for identifying just the drink to elevate your experience.
