Experience The Very Best of Rome, Italy

It’s nearly impossible to fit the majesty of Rome into one travel guide, but making the attempt certainly has us ready to hop on the next flight. Rome is the European epicenter of art, food, and a culture always moving towards the modern while staying connected to the past. Not to mention, the weather in Rome is nearly always relatively comfortable, and it’s a wonderful jumping-off point for visiting many other Italian cities and sights. When in Rome, here are the accommodations, restaurants, bars, and attractions we’d recommend for a pasta-packed visit to one of the most unforgettable cities in the world.

Our Favorite Luxury Hotels in Rome

Resting up is an essential piece of your romp around Rome. Instead of endlessly scrolling through AirBnb, consider a few of our favorite hotels, like the Palazzo Ripetta. This former convent has been noted as “one of the few remaining independent five-stars in Rome” by CNTraveler. Recently redone by a renown Italian designer and architect, the bright and innovative visuals of this hotel are the perfect backdrop for your Roman adventure. Our favorite part? Browsing the owner’s personal art collection before heading out into the city.

The Bulgari Hotel Roma has done the most for their hometown hotel. This luxury brand is known for pulling out all the stops at their properties worldwide, but their Rome hotel is truly in a league of its own. Hotel service offerings include chauffeured cars, vintage Fiat 500 sightseeing tours, personal shoppers, and more. You’ll feel right at home—or maybe a touch more elevated—among Bulgari’s custom art pieces and pristine terrace bar.

Indulge in the quiet luxury of Six Senses. Rome is one of their first big-city sanctuaries, offering the peace of remote paradise among Rome’s busy streets. Locals and travelers alike can be find reading a book or grabbing a drink in the smartly furnished lobby. We also love the Hotel Maalot. This is a five-star pick for hip travelers looking for fresh and modern accommodations with a certain vintage twist. The Maalot is an aesthete’s dream with an eclectic mix of textures, colors, and artwork. Finally, if you need us, we’re daydreaming about laying by the pool at the Gran Meliá. This hotel is straight out of your favorite summer romance novel with daybeds, palm trees, and a crystal blue pool to match.

Where to Grab a Drink in Rome

Travel pro-tip: having a drink in a hotel lobby—even if not your own—is a great way to meet fellow travelers from all over the world. Hotel d’Angleterre is the perfect spot for this endeavor, especially because the former palazzo is a piece of Roman history itself. Argot Bar is the place to go if you’re in the know. Vintage glassware paired with innovative drinks makes Argot Bar a favorite late-night spot for speakeasy vibes.

If you wander for long enough through the Sacripante Gallery, a convent-turned-art-gallery, you’ll find one of the most unique bars in Rome. Keep an eye out for medicine cabinets and apothecary decor, and you’ll know you’re in the right place. When it comes to Co.So, we’re not using the word “innovative” lightly. No other cocktail bar in Italy (or possibly the world) takes their influences more seriously. At Co. So., you can enjoy hints of Roman, Sicilian, and Japanese inspiration in every sip. Book the speakeasy space for a private experience. Oh—and this list wouldn’t be complete without Drink Kong. Drink Kong is a world-renown global stable because of its well-versed cocktail menu, expert mixologists, and mixture of fun and mysterious vibes. Don’t miss their surprising food menu either!

Choosing The Right Restaurant in Rome

Did you know it’s customary to eat gnocchi on Thursdays in Italy? Our favorite gnocchi stop is Trattoria Da Teo, a neighborhood eatery that’s not messing around on the quality of their classics. For finer dining, check out Almato. All 28 seats in this fine dining establishment are always reserved, either by savvy travelers or locals eager to see the latest tricks up Chef Tommaso Venuti’s sleeve.

Eat authentic Italian pizza among locals at A Rota Pizzeria Romanesca. You’ll find this spot set apart from the typical tourist drags, and the usual clientele is groups of Romans catching up over really, really good food. You’ll find classic pizza options, like four-cheese and margherita, but the sausage and potato pizza is the best-seller. For an authentic Italian experience, look no further than Trattoria Da Danilo. It’s a classic trattoria like the ones that have fed Romans for centuries. Known around the globe for their carbonara, Trattoria Da Danilo will set your Italian food standard to new heights.

For a more casual yet modern pit stop, La Rinascente Food Hall is an upscale market and food hall. Consider it your one-stop shop for high-end Italian meat, pasta, and produce. Grab some goods to build your own picnic, or head up to the rooftop to rest, have a bite, and enjoy the view. If you’re looking for the new and the next, Roscioli is Rome’s hottest reservation! This hip and upscale restaurant offers the best in classic Italian dishes with a modern attitude. Have the charcuterie board of your dreams thanks to a nearby butcher and cheese shop, also run by the owners of Roscioli.

          Unique Activities in Rome

Surely you have the classic must-dos on your Roman itinerary: The Trevi fountain, the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Sistine Chapel…the list goes on! In fact, we highly recommend booking a ticket for a hop on, hop off bus tour so you can knock these out with efficiency. Savvy travelers know that while these sites are important, they only skim the surface of important things to see and do in Rome. Here are some lesser-known stops we think you should add to your list.

History, religion, and architecture buffs should visit the Basilica of San Clemente. Among all the fantastic religious structures in Rome, visitors confirm that there’s something unique about this one. The Basilica of San Clemente offers literal layers of Roman history. Underneath this church is another church, and underneath that church is one of the first settlements in the city, complete with roads and homes. The Baths of Caracalla are also a neat spot to soak in some history. In the 3rd century, these were public baths. Today, you can visit the ruins by day, or catch the Rome Opera company performing in the open-air theater by night.

Biking the Via Appia is a wonderful way to hit the ancient pavement and see one of Rome’s oldest streets in all its well-preserved glory. Many tours recommend an itinerary that’s about 17 miles long, making cycling a fun and efficient way to travel through the area. We also love the Monte Mario Nature Reserve for travelers who want to take a rest from the city bustle and enjoy Rome’s natural beauty. This park takes you to the highest hill in Rome and offers incredible views among its nature trails, animal sightings, and green sprawl fit for picnicking.

You could spend months in Rome and still run out of time to see all of its art galleries, but let Palazzo Spada be one you don’t miss. Located inside a Baroque palace, you’ll find a lot of grand Renaissance work, including Caravaggio. Palazzo Spada offers a similar experience to more well-known museums, but without the crowded exhibits. For a more contemporary museum, visit the MAXXI Rome, designed by renowned Italian architect Zaha Hadid. The MAXXI is a breath of modern air among the rich history of Rome. From photography to immersive installations, you won’t want to miss the unique exhibits they have on rotation here.

Dive into your own infinity pool by day and dine alfresco on your private patio by night. A visit to Los Cabos will also provide a peaceful escape, with contemporary interiors and unparalleled views of the sunset on the water. Absorb Mexico’s natural beauty in a luxury villa you can call home.

            Road Trip

Taking to the open road is an ideal way to get out of the house during the pandemic. For those that prefer to travel by car, California cities are some of the best for basking in the warm weather and swaying palm trees. Luxury rental properties in Palm Springs are known for their quintessential, mid-century modern flair.

Private pools and breath-taking views of the mountains create the perfect setting for being productive by day and indulging in relaxation by night. Or pack up the car and unwind in San Diego at an oceanfront villa perfect for the whole family. You’ll awaken to the sound of the waves and can lounge on the beach after a day’s work.

            Staycation

Los Angeles residents may enjoy a holiday staycation to live in luxury right in their own city. Hollywood Hills residences offer modern architectural design along with unmatched views of the city. Private swimming pools are a must, along with luscious interiors and spacious living areas.

You can also drive along PCH to Malibu, where properties overlooking the ocean make for a summery getaway all year long. Bright, coastal rooms with breezy, open layouts allow you to breathe easy during your pandemic stay. Beverly Hills also offers pristine properties where a private estate can be yours to live a lavish escape.

            Long-Term Stays

Sometimes an extended change of scenery is all it takes to relax and rejuvenate during the pandemic. A stay of one month or longer gives you time to settle into a new environment with ease. Some travel destinations may require a period of quarantine, which makes a long-term escape ideal for making the most of your experience. Head to Aspen to immerse yourself in a cozy luxury property nestled in nature. The snowy landscapes will place you in a winter wonderland where you can enjoy the peace and serenity of the Colorado Rocky Mountains.

Explore Hotels in The UK Countryside

While we love the hustle and bustle of London and the timelessness of Edinburgh, there’s something truly special about the countryside of the United Kingdom. For centuries, people have been escaping to these rugged coastlines and rolling hills to relax, unwind, and enjoy the breeze for a moment. From the Cotswolds to the Highlands, here are some of our favorite luxury countryside hotels in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales.

Heckfield Place is just an hour and a half drive from London. This 1800’s mansion was once known for the exotic fruits grown on-premises, and now it serves as a cozy countryside getaway. The modernity of the bar and common spaces is a pleasant surprise, coexisting nicely with the stately red-brick exterior. The chef here uses the estate’s farm as a playground for what happens in the kitchen every evening, so you can expect fresh, seasonal meals. Spend your days unwinding at the Heckfield spa, or visit the wineries nearby.

Don’t be shocked if there’s a catch in your stomach upon arriving at the Cotswolds’ Estelle Manor. The grand stone facade is like something from a movie, and inside you’ll find a fun, flitty atmosphere curated by vintage pieces mixed with modern flair. Groups and families might opt for a private cottage, while couples and solo travelers will enjoy a bedroom in the main house. Either way, Estelle Manor is set on 3,000 acres of farmland fit for relaxing. Not to mention the billiard room, clubhouse, poolside bar, workspaces, and pilates studio. A unique feature of this hotel is its childcare services, making this a fabulous option for a family getaway.

Soak in the view of the Scottish Highland coastline at Lundies House. This 1842 clergy house is not technically your own private country house, but the vibes here make it feel that way. Take a dip in the natural pool outside, tell a story by the fire, and enjoy a menu tailored just for you. Important to note—Lundies House is located in the small village of Tongue, which is to say it’s not simple to get there. Still, despite the remote location, this boutique hotel has made a real name for itself in the international luxury accommodation space. Pack your hiking boots and an adventurous spirit and enjoy your change in scenery.

The Fife Arms might be the most renown hotel in the U.K. There’s not an inch of this hotel that hasn’t been outfitted with a tasteful balance of Victorian classic and new-age modernity. Enjoy a facial or a manicure in between your whiskey tastings and guided tours of the Highlands, or simply soak in the ambience for a while. The art collections alone are reason enough to pay the Fife Arms a visit. They also have artists-in-residence who are invited to stay at the hotel and create visual and written representations of what it’s like to be a guest in this unique environment.

The Irish breakfast here is stand-out, but you’ll leave the table satisfied no matter the time of day. With just five bedrooms, this hotel might be the coziest one on our list. Four-legged friends are also welcome, making this the perfect place to getaway with your pup and explore the Armagh hills together.

If your crew would rather enjoy traditional resort accommodations, Cabo has some of the best. The Viceroy Los Cabos boasts floor-to-ceiling windows to ocean views, modern and minimal decor, a luxury infinity pool, holistic spa, and a trendy onsite Mediterranean restaurant. It’s also located on the Sea of Cortés and just steps away from the historic streets of San José del Cabo.

At the Waldorf Astoria, you’ll enjoy iconic onsite dining and spa options and a  personal concierge or private butler per room.

                Enjoying Cabo By Day

Is it really a bachelorette party in Cabo if you don’t pop champagne on a boat? We recommend dedicating one day of the trip to a yacht or catamaran charter to soak up the sea views. Boating over to Medano Beach is a great idea for groups who want to enjoy beach bars and swimming in calm waters. Or, head to Sea of Cortés and party all day at the OMNIA dayclub.

If your crew needs a chill day, start by booking treatments at one of the many luxury spas. Then, if you want to enjoy some movement, take a hike up the Pedregal to enjoy views of Cabo and admire hilltop villas. We also recommend something adventurous like zip lining, paddle boarding, and snorkeling. Visit Flora Farms for 25 acres of organic vegetables, flowers, and herbs. Flora Farms once supplied Cabo’s high-end restaurants with fresh produce, but now this peaceful spot offers their own farm-to-table restaurant and group cooking classes.

The Best Dining and Drinking in Cabo

SHOREbar Los Cabos, sister of the Santa Monica location, is great for cocktails in an open-air beachfront spot. It’s located at the Vidanta hotel so you know your satisfaction is their top priority. Pre-dinner drinks are all about atmosphere, so we also recommend the Cape Rooftop or the Cielomar Rooftop at the Viceroy for small plates, cocktails, and a perfect view of where the sky meets the sea.

For dinner, enjoy incredible fresh fish (sea bass, red snapper, yellowfin, jumbo shrimp and more) at The Waldorf Astoria’s El Farallon. Spots like Palomar and Cocina de Autor have been serving Cabo’s VIP guests for years and never disappoint. Treat the group to something special at Manta, lead by iconic Mexican chef Enrique Olvera, or go super authentic at Los Tres Gallos.

Mandala is the most exclusive club in the area, known for its Indian-inspired decor, onsite dining at Abolengo, and VIP treatment all night long. Pink Kitty is also a go-to spot for bottle service and international DJs. Jungle Bar and Happy Ending Cantina are great for those looking for a lower-key, dive bar vibe. Your group also can’t miss El Squid Roe, an iconic two-story Cabo nightclub that’s been a favorite for years. Cabo Wabo is also a can’t-miss spot for drinks and dancing till morning. This exclusive London club has been in high demand since it landed in Mayfair back in 2018, and it isn’t hard to see why. The huge stage always has an amazing DJ or live performance going on, and the floor is crawling with celebrities, looking to get down to some hip-hop and R&B under the eye-catching neon lights.

The Alice in Wonderland vibes at this highly desirable club span over two floors and 5,0000 sq ft, and never fail to attract a stylish crowd. The upstairs mainly plays hip-hop, and the downstairs plays house, but both are drenched in mood lights and packed with energy. Keep an eye out for frequent theme nights and brand activations, both of which get pretty wild.

                    Archer Street

While not technically a club, this hip cocktail bar stays open until 2am, and always devolves into a dance party, with staff and patrons alike dancing and singing on the tables. It’s exciting, offbeat, and weirdly comforting. There’s great drinks and great energy, spread across three venues in Soho, Notting Hill, and SW11.

This luxurious London club is members only, but the lucky few who make the list are in for the time of their lives. There’s two dance floors, an intimate greenroom, courtyard, and a dedicated shisha lounge. If the nightclub and terrace aren’t the vibe, there’s even an Italian restaurant on the premises.
