Experience Tailor Nashville: Indian Home Cooking at Its Finest

    Experience Tailor Nashville

Nashville, Tennessee has a new hotspot that has opened up to thunderous acclaim. The restaurant has been named one of Bon Appetit’s 10 Best New Restaurants in America, its head chef, Vivek Surti, has earned the achievement of being a James Beard Award semifinalist. Impressive accolades for sure, but a single meal at Tailor Nashville will convince even the most skeptical diner that Surti has created something truly special. Gujarati cooking is something that does not need elevating, but Surti has taken extra care at every step to create a seasonal menu that highlights the bold, nostalgic flavors the region is known for. With intimate presentation and plenty of pairings, anecdotes, and surprises from the chef himself, few restaurants can embody the warmth, comfort, and soul of Nashville quite like Tailor. It’s a remarkable gift, from his family to yours. Sit down, take a load off, and get to know this exciting destination.

    The Dining Room

The space itself feels more like a friend’s home than a restaurant, with exposed brick walls, bespoke decorations, and no communal tables in sight. Warm light shines down from the enormous crystal chandelier – an actual heirloom from chef Surti’s family home – which sets the stage for a truly pleasant meal. Grab a drink at the side bar, sink into a blueberry leather seat, and clink glasses with close company. You might catch a glimpse of Surti explaining the meal to come, or if you’re lucky, opening a bottle of bubbly with a saber.

There are only two seatings each night, and the energy is palpable. Everyone is friendly, relaxed, and as excited to tell you about the food as you are to eat it. The light earth tones around the restaurant really make the colorful food pop, and every moment is a simple but elegant photo op. Take in the drifting scents of spices and fresh brewed Chai, and breathe easy; you’re home.

    The Menu

Chef Surti’s story begins at home, with influences, ingredients and traditions originating from his mother’s cooking. His style seamlessly blends South Asian flavors with a hint of his Nashville upbringing, putting special emphasis on the beauty of everyday foods and the warmth they bring into our lives. (And with fresh ingredients and expert preparation, it’s hard not to be convinced.)

Tailor’s seasonal coursed menu is extremely tight, with only 7-8 dishes to enjoy, which should speak to their quality. Winter 2024’s menu, for example, is lauded for the Kadhi, a yogurt soup carefully seasoned with cumin, white turmeric, and ginger. Dip the handmade Thelpi frybread in the concoction, but save room for the Sweet Potato Bhel, Surti’s take on an iconic Indian Street food, and the signature Amaroo Hills Farm duck, served as both a perfectly marinated breast, and a jaw-droppingly tender duck confit biryani.

The menu is fully dynamic, changing as the seasons pass and more than able to accommodate dietary restrictions. With fresh vegetables every season and Surti’s new ideas always finding their way to the table, there’s no way of knowing what awaits you at your reservation, and no doubt that it will be something magical.

    Sip & Savor

The beverage services at Tailor Nashville are world-class, with a large selection of domestic and international wines to complement your meal. An entire page of inventive and original cocktails is sure to delight every palette, with options ranging from sweet and light to bold and timeless. But for the true Tailor experience, the beverage pairing cannot be skipped. It features many captivating choices from the lengthy beverage menu, whose stories and qualities make the experience all the more memorable. For those who don’t partake, there’s even a spirit-free pairing that features all the teas and tonics best suited to supplement the delicious food.

This is all without mentioning the iconic Chai, a recipe Surti’s dad has been developing for over 10 years. We know it contains real Gujarati Tea and a hint of fresh ginger, but the enchanting blend of spices remains a mystery. The tea is served alongside Nankhatai, his dad’s favorite cookie, and makes for an idyllic conclusion to an already memorable meal.

The refined rustic cuisine has a focus on seasonal, market-driven ingredients, and bold flavors that capture the Miami beach lifestyle.

            Carbone

This Italian gem is one of the most celebrated restaurants in Miami, and the New York Times described it best as “a fancy red-sauce joint as directed by Quentin Tarantino, bringing back the punch-in-the-guts thrills of a genre that everybody else sees as uncultured and a little embarrassing, while exposing the sophistication that was always lurking there”. Essentially, diners are in for world-class pizzas and pasta in a homey, yet sophisticated atmosphere. A must-visit for locals and tourists alike.

            Komodo

Both the flair, and the flavor of Southeast Asia can be found at Komodo, Brickell’s premier choice for delectable Asian dishes. Appetizers like the gooey jalapeño fritters and cacio e pepe cheesy puffs are sure to hook any diner. Good thing too, you wouldn’t want to miss the roasted barramundi served atop a delicate stew of onions, citrus, and carrot puree.

            LPM Restaurant and Bar

This delightful import from London serves up Mediterranean plates and Provençal dishes you might sample on the French Riviera. High ceilings, terrace dining, and the surrounding consulates, high-end fashion shops and luxury hotels make LPM one classy affair. Be sure to try the escargot, and the whole sea bream baked en papillote.

            Makoto

For fans of fresh sushi it’s hard to beat Stephen Starr’s luxurious Japanese restaurant. With an outdoor patio as the backdrop, guests can enjoy a refined sashimi platter or heaping crab salad. The spicy tuna with crispy rice is in contention for king of the trendy appetizer, and Makoto for king of fine food in a tropical atmosphere.

Thomas Keller’s restaurant inside the Four Seasons Surf Club embodies all the quality and elegance the chef is known for. The eatery is a sparkling mid century oasis by the sea, with all your favorites from a leisurely bygone era. Sorelle: Southern Italy Comes to Charleston

                Experience Sorelle in Charleston

Charleston, South Carolina has a new hotspot that has opened up to critical acclaim, bringing world-class Southern Italian cooking to the town’s sunny shores. Inspired by Italian all-day cafes, the stunning Sorelle Charleston is a dining experience like no other, boasting a Mercato, central bar, wine room, pizza counter, and more. Prospective diners have been scrambling for the chance to sample the menu of fresh pastas, to sip authentic espresso in the luxurious digs, and to fill a basket with all the craft gelato, wine, and premium Italian foodstuffs the bustling market has to offer. While it might be tough to secure a reservation, the bar is walk-ins only, and the festive atmosphere and fabulous food make Sorelle a must-visit, for Charleston locals and tourists alike. Grab a tall pour of vino and get to know this exciting venue.

                The Space

The sophisticated digs at Sorelle are extremely charming, even by Charleston’s standards. The award-winning Meyers-Davis Studio has reimagined three gorgeous townhouses on iconic Broad Street into a buzzing center of vibrancy and joy. Expansive windows and refined furnishings give the spacious rooms an inviting air of excitement. Each dining area has a distinct flavor and feel, perfect for everything from a big celebration to casual cocktails by candlelight. Guests are greeted by the sun-drenched dining room, where wood fired pizzas and piping plates of fresh pasta are served around the clock. The tall ceilings give way to the brass lighting and marble countertops of the stunning alimentari, with the romantic woodgrain-and-leather bar just around the corner. At Sorelle, alluring history meets intoxicating modernity, with pleasant surprises all around.

                The Menu

Chefs Adam Sobel and Nick Dugan’s fresh takes on classic Southern Italian cuisine have garnered significant attention from Charleston foodies, for good reason. Their focus on fresh ingredients and skilled preparation make for a menu that always hits the mark. In 2022, the pair spent two months researching and perfecting their recipes in Italy. As Dugen says “The best research is getting out there and digging a spoon into things!”, and that work and passion certainly comes through in the food. The “Pillows of Gold” ricotta tortellini immediately comes to mind, topped with mouthwatering prosciutto cotto, balsamico, and delightfully fresh butter, taking inspiration from local chefs, farmers, and nonnas. The dish has attracted quite the following, and diners would be remiss not to grab a plate. Don’t fill up however, the delectable arancini stuffed with bolognese and pasta-baked branzino are must-trys. Paired with a heaping helping of the pollo al lambrusco, Sorelle’s take on coq au vain, diners are in for a hearty but balanced meal, and a complete tour of Italy’s incredible culinary scene.

Should you arrive in the morning, Mercato offers Lamill coffee drinks and house mascarpone. Nothing pairs with a cappuccino quite like a cannoli made fresh. Stay for lunch and pick up a meatball and ricotta sandwich, or Sicilian pizza by the slice. Round out your meal with a scoop of handmade gelato, and a craft beer or bold Italian wine, always paired to perfection.

                Sip & Savor

Enjoy a taste of Southern Italian culture with Sorelle’s sensational selection of drinks and spaces to enjoy them. Start your evening in the grand dining room, taking in the natural light and sipping a delicious twist on a spritz, or a house martini prepared tableside. For guests feeling overwhelmed by the number of enticing cocktails, the menu is split into drinks to be enjoyed before, during, and after your meal. If you find your way to the atmospheric bar, peruse the craft beer list! Local or domestic, they’re always cold, and always delicious. The beverage tour wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the sumptuous wine room, boasting an unmatched collection of fine wines and spirits. Should you need a recommendation, the expertly-trained staff would be more than happy to find the perfect fit for you.

                The Mercato

Sorelle’s first floor is open to an unbearably quaint market chock full of authentic Italian goods for patrons to enjoy. Mornings in the mercato are accompanied by the smells of fresh baked pastries and espresso, while lunches are punctuated with all sorts of casual Italian fare, from chop salads to Sicilian pizza. Keep an eye out for Chef’s soup selection, fresh, flavorful, and different every day. Guests will need to see the loaded shelves for themselves, but they can expect a fabulous selection of meats, cheeses, and dried goods to bring home a taste of the Mediterranean.
