20 Best Hidden Speakeasy Bars in Los Angeles

secret speakeasy door through bookcase

Photo: Zocha Group – Best Hidden Speakeasy Bars in Los Angeles

Hidden Speakeasies in Los Angeles

The prohibition era of the 1920s was known for its prolific speakeasy bars that opened in response to the nationwide ban on alcohol. The iconic style of hidden-away lounges with secret passwords, unmarked signage and disguised entrances didn’t disappear with prohibition’s repeal, and made a lively comeback in Los Angeles over the past decade. Duck into the best hidden speakeasy bars in Los Angeles to sip libations in a uniquely mysterious space.

The Varnish – Downtown LA

One of the original bars kicking off the speakeasy resurgence, the Varnish is located at the back of Downtown LA’s lauded Cole’s French Dip restaurant. With an award-winning bar program, and cozy space that was formerly a storage closet, you’re sure to enjoy the exemplary hidden speakeasy bars experience.

In Sheeps Clothing – Downtown LA

Head to Lupetti Pizzeria in the Downtown Arts District to find In Sheep’s Clothing tucked behind a nondescript door inside the restaurant. The “hi-fi record bar and cafe” prides itself on creating a music-focused experience with loud conversations and photos discouraged while listening to the featured vinyl albums.

Old Lightning – Marina Del Rey

You’d never guess that at the back of bustling restaurant Scopa Italian Roots, a priceless collection of some of the world’s most rare liquors would be building at Old Lightning. Those with a palate for vintage bourbon and whiskey check their phones at the door for an intimate lesson in aged flavors and irreplaceable spirits.

Alley Lounge – Culver City

Culver City’s Alley Lounge is an inviting bar tucked away behind Fin restaurant, and can be found beyond what looks to be a kitchen service door at the end of an unassuming alley. Delicious drinks and talented bartenders keep guests entertained along with a menu of late-night eats.

The Edison – Downtown LA

One thing that may give away this speakeasy’s location is the long line of patrons hoping to get in each weekend. Located down a flight of stairs at the end of an alley, this site of a former power plant now takes on the unique combination of steampunk and vintage decor with burlesque dancers helping to set the sultry Roaring Twenties mood.

Sunset & Vinyl – Hollywood

With no sign or indication that it exists, much of Sunset & Vinyl’s popularity came from good old fashioned word-of-mouth, just like its speakeasy predecessors. Visit Sunset and Vine’s 800 Degrees Pizza location and head up the stairs in the back of the restaurant to find this vintage, vinyl-inspired space perfect for listening to music with a flavorful cocktail.

La Descarga – East Hollywood

Travel back in time to 1950s Havana at La Descarga in East Hollywood. With a surprising secret entrance that leads you to an expansive room filled with live salsa music, burlesque dancers and cigar smoking, your senses will be overwhelmed as you dance the night away in this rustic hot spot.

Adults Only – Hollywood

Guests may not expect much from a strip mall bar, but are in for a treat at this spacious lounge in Hollywood. Pass through the faux adult video store entrance to find a dance floor, a big screen playing videos and plenty of room to mix and mingle in the youthful, nightlife atmosphere.

Bar Jackalope – Downtown LA

Seven Grand is one of Downtown’s prized whiskey bars, but for an even further elevated experience, become a member and reserve a spot at the exclusive Bar Jackalope hidden inside. Non-members can try the place out on a first-come first-served basis to ring the mysterious doorbell and taste a series of Japanese whiskeys.

The Del Monte Speakeasy – Venice

This historical destination is an original hidden speakeasy bars in Los Angeles that operated during prohibition by smuggling in alcohol through underground tunnels. Currently standing as Venice’s oldest bar, you can find this seductive space by descending the stairs at Townhouse, formerly an inconspicuous grocery store with a clandestine secret. Live comedy shows, burlesque performances and DJs entertain the Westside at this vintage hot spot.

Pacific Seas – Downtown LA

Initially opened in 1932 to channel an adventurous island oasis, Pacific Seas restaurant was the original inspiration for American tiki culture, and was reopened in 2016 as a speakeasy within Clifton’s Downtown. You’ll find it behind a hidden door on the fourth floor of the massive bar and lounge.

R Bar – Koreatown

This Koreatown dive bar channels a true prohibition style with a rotating password that guests must track down each night. Inside you’ll find a pirate-themed space with karaoke and bar food for a laid back night out.

Good Times at Davey Waynes – Hollywood

This local favorite is known for its signature garage sale entrance and long lines stretching down the block. Guests pile in each night to experience the 1970s living room theme with classic hits from the decade playing all night long, along with a backyard patio to take in the LA breeze.

Blind Barber – Culvery City & Highland Park

Don’t be fooled by the fully-operational barbershop storefront, Blind Barber keeps the “party in the back” when you head through a door in the shop to find its lively lounge space. Similar to its NYC, Chicago and Miami locations, the sleek, hidden bars in Culver City and Highland Park offer up great cocktails and the brand’s signature grilled cheese sandwiches.

£10 (Ten Pound) – Beverly Hills

The Montage Beverly Hills is hiding a secret, and you’ll find it when you head up the hidden staircase on the second floor of the hotel. Ten Pound is a lavish lounge that specializes in single malt Scotch, so you won’t be disappointed by their impressive whisky collection.

Break Room 86 – Koreatown

One of Koreatown’s favorite hangouts is the 1980s-themed Break Room 86. Follow your guide down a secret passageway within The Line Hotel to enter the vibrant bar filled with cassette tapes, old televisions, breakdance performers and even private karaoke rooms.

Basement Tavern – Santa Monica

A staple on the Westside, Basement Tavern sits beneath The Victorian–a historic home built in 1892 that was transported to its prime Santa Monica location on Main Street. The underground lounge is perfect for an intimate night on the town with occasional live performances in a vintage setting.

No Vacancy – Hollywood

An ode to 1920s prohibition, No Vacancy is one of Hollywood’s best hot spots with a Disney-esque speakeasy entrance that’s sure to impress. The historic building was formerly a schoolhouse for the children of Hollywood’s Golden Age, and later a brothel, but now stands as a go-to for delicious drinks, burlesque performances and dancing on the outdoor patio.

Lock & Key – Koreatown

You may not expect much from the exterior of this covert hotspot, but a stylish speakeasy lounge hides behind a room full of doorknobs where guests are tasked with figuring out a way in. The back patio makes for an inviting dancefloor on weekends along with plenty of space to mix and mingle amongst intricate textures and sultry furnishings inside.

The Slipper Clutch – Downtown LA

Santa Monica Farmers Market

The Santa Monica Farmers’ Market is where LA’s elite chefs go to grab their astonishingly fresh produce and get ideas for new dishes. As such, the market is more catered to dealing with large orders, so if you ever find yourself needing 10 lbs of fresh carrots or 20 jars of organic hummus, this is the place to go.

Beverly Hills Farmers Market

With over 60 farmers and vendors contributing to the Beverly Hills Farmers’ Market, there is a large selection of options for you to choose from. Fresh fruit, crepes, live music, and even a petting zoo for your kids are all things you can expect to see on an average Sunday at the Beverly Hills market.

Where to Watch Fireworks

Whether you were born in the USA or just visiting for the summer, the Fourth of July is an essential holiday to celebrate across the country. From barbecues to pool parties, the day’s festivities involve merrymaking with friends and family and most importantly, ending the night watching a sky full of fireworks. This popular travel day has a variety of ideal destinations with each offering the perfect view of the sparkling night sky. Take your Independence Day trip to new heights with these great places to watch the fireworks this 4th of July summer night.

New York City

The East River is the source of NYC’s biggest show known as the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular. If you’re lucky enough to have a clear view of the river, you’ll get the full experience with an accompanying music score to put you in the patriotic mood. Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn have the best view with barges also giving Midtown and South Street Seaport a good sightline. Hotels like 1Hotel, The Bowery, The Freehand or The Nomad make for great vantage points, or make the trek to the river to see the 45-minute event up close.

Los Angeles

With the sprawling city offering up a range of events from Marina del Rey to Pasadena, you’ll be sure to find an impressive display no matter your neighborhood of choice. The Hollywood Bowl hosts an annual Fourth of July party with The Go-Go’s being this year’s artist to perform during the celebration. Dodger Stadium will be lit up even brighter than usual with an all-American game to round out your evening. One of the biggest LA events is the Rose Bowl’s Americafest which boasts rides, crafts and tailgating outside the stadium in preparation for the eye-catching show.

San Diego

San Diego makes for a great Fourth of July destination with its perfect weather and beachside locale. Their numerous shows of the night take place in Old Town, Ocean Beach, SeaWorld, and their most popular, the Annual Big Bay Boom July 4th Fireworks Show. The largest in the county, this fireworks display lights up the sky from multiple locations along the North Bay. Having four barges placed along the water means you’ll have no problem finding the perfect view with a stay at hotels like Omni, Hotel del Coronado, or Pendry San Diego.

Chicago

Any Chicago resident knows that Navy Pier is the place to go for a fireworks show during the summer. Their 4th of July Aon Summer Fireworks, presented by Miller Lite, is the biggest of the season with a dazzling display over the lake. This unofficial yet fully embraced Independence Day show allows locals and visitors head to Millennium Park to see the explosive festivities up close. For those searching for a rooftop view, bars like Streeterville Social, Apogee, Upstairs at The Gwen or Cindy’s offer up the perfect perspective for the spectacular event.

LA’s The Bungalow Expands to Two New Southern California Locations

The Bungalow Expands to Two New Locations

Any visitor to Santa Monica is bound to hear buzz about The Bungalow as it holds its place as one of the busiest bars on the Westside. After expanding to Huntington Beach, the Bungalow brand continues to travel down the coast with the announcement of two new Long Beach and La Jolla locations. The beachy brand will soon be making its mark in these California cities bringing crowds of guests to enjoy their signature eclectic, outdoor space.

The Beginning of The Bungalow

The Bungalow’s flagship Santa Monica location opened in 2012 at The Fairmont Miramar Hotel and soon became a staple in the West LA bar scene. The unmatched Baja-inspired atmosphere of mixing and mingling with a view of the ocean waves has led the Bungalow brand to continue its successes, solidifying itself as a go-to for bar hoppers. Whether guests are stopping by to enjoy the outdoor patio, play a game of pool or ping pong, or warm up by the fire pit, the lounge space offers up a good time for everyone with a relaxed, welcoming environment.

Much of The Bungalow’s success is due to the creativity of nightlife guru Brent Bolthouse, who created the concept and heads The Bungalow Hospitality Group. Bolthouse’s legacy in the industry, along with bringing on Venice-based design partners Studio Collective, made the perfect combination of talent to push forth the uniquely Californian brand.

The Opening of Huntington Beach

Bolthouse’s Bungalow Hospitality Group soon expanded the concept to the similarly beach-driven city Huntington Beach in 2016, creating an Orange County outpost of the popular hot spot. The Bungalow Huntington Beach took on an aesthetic familiar to the original with textured accents and vintage designs that complement the city’s own history of surf culture. The success of the brand has led to the upcoming launch of two new Southern California properties under the Bungalow name—one in Long Beach and another in San Diego’s La Jolla.

The Huntington Beach location boasts a food menu from local partner Bear Flag Fish Co., but the two new locales will get an upgraded dining menu from world-renowned chef and restaurateur Michael Mina. The Michelin-starred chef founded MINA Group, which owns more than 40 restaurants across the country. The new Bungalow menus will include small bites and large shareable plates along with specialty cocktails.

Expansion of The Bungalow

Guests will have a view of the harbor at the Long Beach location situated in the recently opened 2nd & PCH complex in the Belmont Shores neighborhood. The Bungalow Long Beach will have one of the biggest spaces in the complex with a layout amounting to 8,000 square feet. The new seaside lounge broke ground in 2019 and will soon make its mark on the Long Beach bar scene.

The Bungalow La Jolla will be connected to the Westfield UTC with its own dedicated building featuring views of Downtown. The plans include an expansive 10,000 square foot layout with half of that belonging to the outdoor space alone. Guests can look forward to visiting this San Diego County destination as early as spring of 2020.

America’s First Cannabis Cafe

The Original Cannabis Cafe

After California passed the legalization of recreational marijuana use, Los Angeles has been abuzz with speculation of how the popular plant will be integrated into its many hospitality spaces. With only a handful of properties approved for a cannabis license, hospitality concepts are being created to embrace newfound opportunities for guests to experience some of the most innovative concepts in the world. With Original Cannabis Cafe now open, a precedent will soon be set for how similar hospitality concepts will operate in a new era of cannabis consumption.

The Country’s First Cannabis Cafe

Officially open since October 1st, West Hollywood’s new Cannabis Cafe has been awarded the title of being the country’s first cannabis cafe–a concept brand new to the hospitality scene in response to California’s passage of recreational cannabis use in 2018. The highly-coveted license required to run the business received over 300 applicants, but was only approved for eight new venues in West Hollywood.

Dishes Made to Complement the Heightened Senses

Unlike weed dispensaries, Cannabis Cafe is approved for on-site consumption of cannabis in the form of flowers, vapes, pre-made edibles, concentrates and extracts. Alcohol consumption and CBD food or drink aren’t available due to state law, but that won’t stop guests from taking a bite from their delicious food menu created by Chef Andrea Drummer. Dishes made to complement the “heightened senses” of cannabis include a fried chicken sandwich, candied pork belly, brussels sprouts and a dessert plate, with items expected to be rotated seasonally. Non-alcoholic mocktails made with fresh ingredients are also available as a refreshing touch.

The Setting

The trendy space consists of a dining cafe, lounge, and smoking patio along with a retail shop. It isn’t just limited to those wishing to light up, as the property also includes a non-smoking patio and the cafe is open to the public. Along with plenty of plants throughout to keep the space fresh, a custom air-filtration system helps keep smoke away from nearby residents, keeping the party contained to the Cannabis Cafe property.

Lowell Farms

The impressive venue is filled with natural foliage and a rustic, vintage design modeled after the Lowell Farms product brand. The Santa Barbara County-based company joined with LA’s renowned Houston Hospitality along with Una Mas bartending team to create the perfect combination of experiences. Guests are greeted by “Flower Hosts” who provide tableside service to help them choose from the variety of strains. A “Dab Bar” is available for more experienced smokers who already know their favorites. Reservations are good for an hour and a half with cannabis sales ending at 10pm, but guests are able to bring their own products in for consumption until 2am.

Come One, Come All

The venue’s initial reservations were fully booked, but now have openings throughout the day for guests to come and enjoy the space. The property is expected to draw in not only locals, but patrons from neighboring states where open marijuana consumption is not yet legal. Whether it be local residents or those travelling to Los Angeles from around the world, Cannabis Cafe makes history and kickstarts a new era of hospitality with the integration of cannabis.
